Pretty In Pink!

PRETTY IN PINK

While reading in our Gendered Lives textbook I had one photo that really stuck out to me. It was on page 50, it showed a father and son in a mirror. The Dad was shaving, and the little boy was imitating his dad by shaving. The photograph was depicting gendered behaviors.
This weekend I attended my cousin’s birthday party. My cousin realized at an early age that her sex was female, and since then she has developed a learned behavior, loving the color PINK. After reading many Princess books, watching the Disney classics, and seeing other girls, she has learned that girls like the color PINK. She turned FOUR on Sunday. Every single gift she received was the color PINK, and if it was not they she did not pay attention to it. I found it very entertaining to observe her learned gender behaviors that she has imitated from her fictional role models as well as her older sister and mother…..

BIG glass or LITTLE glass

I found the reading to be very fascinating and how all of the terms are explained. As I went through my weekend I tried to look for an example of what I had read about. I am a lucky girl, I have grandparents that live in town and who always are feeding me. Whenever I come over we have a very traditional sit down meal. My grandparents were raised in the generation that women must have a feminine personality and a man must have a masculine personality. As I watched my grandma set the table, I noticed that she gave the women the smaller glasses and the men larger glasses. I found this very interesting, because of my female gender I was given a small glass, and because of my brothers male gender he was given a larger glass. As my grandma continued to fill our plates, she placed half sandwiches on the women’s plates, and full ones on the men’s representing the idea that females need to eat to be skinny and males are just to eat to eat. I could the misconception of how people view sex and gender as the same thing, rather than our biological sex and our learned gender.

Week 1: Fireball

I am Clare Vaterlaus. I was born and raised in Boise, Idaho. I am the fifth of six kids, and I am a fireball, I do what I want. I am a tomboy turned girly girl. I enjoy playing golf, watching television,  and sometimes getting sweaty. I am currently studying Speech Communication and Computer Science and hope to graduate in three semesters.  I work for an After School Program in an elementary school and I am also employed as a Social Net-worker for a potato company.
Throughout this next semester I will be using this blog to post about Gender Communication. I will draw in different ideas about the reading material and apply what I learn to my own experiences. I personally want to focus more on the technology side of Gender Communication and how it is aiding to the movement. I am hoping to be very open minded and that I will learn a lot!
