In the beginning of chapter 8 it posed the question "Do boys perform better than girls in high school math classes?" From personal experience my first response would have been yes, boys do. I have never been good at math no matter how hard I try. It is something that I have always wondered about. As I read through the chapter I learned that boys in the past have scored better than girls, but now it is equal.I found this to be interesting. This week another video went viral on youtube. To my surprise it was someone I had grown up. Her husband had posed the math question how long would it take you to travel 80 miles going 80 m.p.h. I was very impressed at how deep Chelsea thought about the question. She had some good formulas started, but came up a few minutes short. I felt that because she had been expected to get the math problem wrong, that she was going to...
I think it's interesting to see how some people have these inner insecurities due to their race, religion, gender or whatever it may be and they are not even aware of it. There have been several studies that show how a person asks a question can determine the outcome of the answer. For example if a group of african americans and a separate group of caucasians take the same tests about athletic natural ability african americans do better because the stereotype that african americans are naturally good at athletics makes them do better. If the same test is taken but it's said to test a person's math or reasoning skills, caucasians will do better. I just think the psychology behind it is really interesting.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing that information, I couldn't agree more. When a question is implied a certain way it is going to be answered in that way. I learned about that during my Love and Logic training, and that is why posing a question in a certain way is so vital.
