GIRLS GAMES
This YouTube video is a very interesting to analysis for
this particular chapter in Gendered Lives. We learn in the section “girl’s games” (page 127) that girls are involved
in play that is communication centered. I feel that it is in our younger years
where we learn and become part of the common "stereotypes."
This video is quite funny because it is breaking the basic stereotypes of
beauty queens, and the fact they are very proper.
Alana in no way is a typical beauty queen. She loves show her stomach to the
judges but not in a way of complete immodesty, but to show them her tummy
tricks. I feel that she is playing a girls game with a boys
mentality. She is being competitive so she can win the money, and enjoys
controlling what is going on around her. As the social norms
start to change, I feel that with time, modes of play will also adapt to accommodate
newer times.
I have to admit, this video makes me laugh a lot and I do watch Toddlers & Tiaras out of humor. I haven't thought too much into it though. I appreciate this point of view and while I don't necessarily think she is making a conscience decision to exploit herself, she has influences that show her what is proper. Even in the clip it says she chose to be Daisy Duke, and she has the role-model of what that character is supposed to be like. Again, great post!
