What I have Learned...

As the semester is winding down, I have reflected on how this particular class applies to my life. I have been so enlightened from what I have read from the text book, and our discussions in class. I have enjoyed learning about communication styles and how they are portrayed in media. I have learned a lot through the movies and television shows we have viewed in class. There have been many that have left me in utter shock, because I would never have realized these things without a wakeup call. I feel like women need to have more of a positive influence in Media and what is put into the world. I am lucky, most of my classes have intertwined in theories this semester. For my English 2010 class, I focused on a research paper on Pinterest. It is a budding new social bookmarking website. Through my field work I found that many people had the same oblivious mentality I had had about women and their sexual objectivity in media. For our final projects we made a video. With my new knowledge about gender communication stereotypes, I decided to implement both the norm and the unusual into my video. I play a very wedding hungry, slightly stupid woman, who bases her life on the more trivial things. When in reality a wo/men who uses Pinterest responsibly is a SMART wo/men. However, it is at the end that I make a stance. Watch it and see if you can point out things (Good or Bad, Male or Female) from the semester!!! I’m interested to see what you think!

  1. Clare, that was so great! Especially because Corey was my FHE leader last year, what a great kid. It makes sense, every since I got engaged I feel like every (woman) in my life has told me to start planning on Pinterest. I got an account and it's been fun, but not very helpful so I guess. I liked it mostly because Pinterest does seem to be predominately female users and some ladies have said that "if don't have pinterest it's like you are out of touch" which I thought was pretty out there.

  2. Hahah! This was great! I actually focused one of my artifact papers on pinterest. This was a really fun video which applied the concepts of class! I personally use pinterest, and sometimes find myself saying it under my breathe, so I appreciate your thoughts on this website!

  3. Ha thanks! It was fun to make... Sara it's a small world, I actually don't even know him very well, he just lives up stairs! There are so many sterotypes that come with it, and if I have learned anything is to challenge them!!!
